Every child deserves the chance for a healthy start in life. Sickle cell disease is one of the most common inherited blood disorders worldwide. If it is not detected early, it can lead to serious health complications and even death, especially in childhood. However, timely diagnosis allows for early intervention and significantly improves survival chances.

We are therefore very excited to share that our project for early detection of sickle cell disease in newborns in Kakamega County, Kenya, has successfully kicked off. Together with our partners DAMKA, MMUST, and the Kakamega County Health Department, we are building a newborn screening program that enables early diagnosis directly in health centers.

The first successes are already visible:
✅ 320 medical professionals have been trained
✅ 16 health facilities are actively involved
✅ 2,498 newborns have already been screened
✅ The first two children with sickle cell anemia have been identified and referred for specialized care The project not only provides access to life-saving diagnostic measures but also strengthens long-term healthcare for newborns in the region. We are grateful for the collaboration with the Fundación "la Caixa" 'Child Survival' program on this important initiative.
