During discussions with Dr Laura Ruckstuhl, SolidarMed’s Health Programme Manager for Kenya and Zimbabwe, the partners reviewed newborn screening across 21 health facilities in Kakamega County, strengthening SCD services, development of the patient registry, implementation challenges and opportunities for future collaboration. The initiative aims to support early identification of newborns with SCD, enabling timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment and better health outcomes.

The project is implemented by SolidarMed through DAMKA, MMUST and the Kakamega County Department of Health, in collaboration with the ”la Caixa” Foundation.

Through this engagement, DAMKA remains committed to working with the County Government of Kakamega and project partners to expand newborn screening, strengthen healthcare services and improve support for children and families affected by Sickle Cell Disease across the county.

The meeting was attended by Dr David Alilah, Chief Officer for Medical Services; Dr Stephen Wandei, Director of Medical Services, Kakamega County; and Dorothy Carolyne Mabunde, DAMKA Director, alongside other representatives.
