Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) Campaign

The event was organized to advocate for sickle cell awareness and mitigate myths and misconceptions about the disease within the community and local schools. The campaign aimed to reach a wider audience and positively impact sickle cell warriors' lives.

Campaign Objectives

The primary goals of the Sickle Cell Campaign event were to raise awareness, educate the public, and provide support to individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease. The event aimed to reduce stigma and misinformation surrounding the condition while fostering a sense of community and support.

MONTHLY PSYCHO-SOCIAL SUPPORT SESSION HELD AT KHWISERO SUB-COUNTY HOSPITAL ATTRACTS 101 CAREGIVERS AND 124 PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

The gathering brought together caregivers, children living with HIV (CALHIV), and Children with sickle cell disease (Hummingbird Warriors) for a monthly psycho-social support session. The session centered on the theme 'Knowing Yourself,' which aimed to encourage self-awareness, self-acceptance, and emotional well-being among participants. Through interactive discussions and activities, attendees explored topics such as understanding their strengths, managing emotions, and building resilience in the face of challenges. The facilitators emphasized the importance of self-care and maintaining a positive self-image, particularly for those navigating health-related difficulties. The session also provided a safe space for participants to share their experiences, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. By focusing on 'Knowing Yourself,' the program sought to empower individuals to better cope with their circumstances and improve their overall quality of life.

DAMKA GOES OFF-GRID: A STEP TOWARDS GREEN ENERGY AND A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

DAMKA CBO has taken a bold step towards sustainability by installing a solar power system at the Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA Resource Centre. This move to renewable energy not only reduces the Centre’s carbon footprint but also sets an example for the community in the fight against climate change. By harnessing solar energy, the Resource Centre now operates efficiently and sustainably, showcasing how local actions can have a global impact. This initiative also empowers the community through education and skill development in green energy solutions. DAMKA’s shift to solar power is a powerful reminder that small steps can lead to big changes. It’s a call to action for all of us to embrace renewable energy and work towards a greener, more resilient future. Go green. Be the change.

EMPOWERING LEARNERS: BUKOLWE SCHOOL'S SENSITIZATION PROGRAM ON SICKLE CELL DISEASE, HIV, AND SRHR

Learners at Bukolwe School actively participated in an ongoing sensitization program about Sickle Cell Disease and HIV. This initiative, organized by Damka Cbo in partnership with educational institutions, aims to increase awareness of these health conditions among students. The program features informative sessions led by healthcare professionals, interactive discussions, and educational materials designed to help students understand the symptoms, management, and prevention of Sickle Cell Disease and HIV. By promoting knowledge and awareness, the program empowers students to support their peers and contribute to healthier communities. It also encourages open discussions about health issues that are often stigmatized, helping to break down barriers and foster a more informed society. In addition to this, DAMKA advocates for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) through our Red Roses program. This initiative focuses on empowering young girls by providing essential resources, such as monthly sanitary towels, to support their menstrual health with dignity. We also offer dignity packs to young boys, ensuring they receive the support they need as well

EMPOWERING CAREGIVERS AND CHILDREN: A SUCCESSFUL PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT SESSION AT MUMIAS LEVEL IV HOSPITAL

Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark recently held its monthly psychosocial support session at Mumias Level IV Hospital, offering a safe space for caregivers and children affected by Sickle Cell Disease to share experiences and challenges. The session focused on emotional support and featured an engaging nutrition training to help manage the condition effectively. Caregivers learned about the importance of a balanced diet, proper hydration, and how good nutrition can reduce the frequency and severity of sickle cell crises. Through these sessions, we continue to provide holistic care that empowers families to thrive beyond medical treatment.

ENHANCING SAFETY: SUCCESSFUL FIRE SAFETY INSTALLATION AND TRAINING AT DAMKA RESOURCE CENTRE

We are glad to announce the successful completion of the fire safety installation at the Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark (DAMKA) Resource Centre. The facility is now equipped with state-of-the-art fire alarms, extinguishers, and emergency lighting designed to ensure optimal safety for all staff, children, and visitors. Beyond the installation, we conducted comprehensive fire safety training for DAMKA staff. The session covered critical topics such as fire prevention strategies, emergency evacuation procedures, proper use of fire safety equipment, and effective response techniques in case of a fire emergency. To reinforce learning, the training featured hands-on demonstrations, giving staff the opportunity to engage directly with the equipment and build the confidence needed to respond swiftly during emergencies. This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of safety and preparedness at DAMKA, prioritizing the well-being of everyone who walks through our doors

EMPOWERING CAREGIVERS THROUGH LEADERSHIP AND MENTORSHIP TRAINING

Today, we trained 20 caregivers from our four stations—Butere, Manyala, Khwisero, and Muhaka—at the Damka CBO Resource Centre. The session aimed to equip caregivers of Children and Adolescents Living with HIV (CALHIV) with leadership and mentorship skills. The training focused on empowering caregivers to lead effective club meetings, provide personalized care to CALHIV, and mentor them in crucial areas such as psychosocial well-being, academic support, and life skills development. Additionally, the session addressed key adolescent topics, including sexual and reproductive health, to ensure caregivers can offer guidance both during club sessions and within their communities. This initiative is part of our commitment to fostering holistic development for CALHIV, ensuring that caregivers are empowered to serve as role models and mentors, even beyond monthly club sessions.

KICKSTARTING 2025: PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT MEETING FOR CALHIV AND CAREGIVERS AT MUHAKA HEALTH CENTRE

A total of 52 Children and Adolescents Living with HIV (CALHIV) and 44 caregivers attended our first psychosocial support meeting of 2025 at Muhaka Health Centre. Key focus: The unveiling of the Damka Cbo 2025 plan, with a strong emphasis on adhering to DAMKA policies, including regular attendance at club meetings and full commitment to medication (taking full responsibility for one’s health—my health, my responsibility). Caregivers were also encouraged to actively participate to ensure the success of Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA programs.

DAMKA MONTHLY PSYCHOSOCIAL SUPPORT & CLINIC FOR SICKLE CELL WARRIORS & CALHIV

We held Damka Cbo Monthly Psychosocial Support & Clinics for CALHIV (Children and Adolescents Living with HIV) and Sickle Cell Warriors, along with their caregivers, at Manyala and Butere Sub-County Hospitals. While addressing project participants, Miriam (SD) shared DAMKA plans for 2025 and highlighted the essential role of collaboration between caregivers and project participants in achieving the objectives of Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA She encouraged participants to actively engage by attending all club meetings and taking full responsibility for their health. Additionally, she emphasized the necessity of adhering to DAMKA’s policies to ensure the program's success and sustainability.

DAMKA CBO KICKOFF: CAREGIVER EMPOWERMENT PROGRAM LAUNCH

Damka Community-Based Organization (CBO) officially kicked off its Caregiver Empowerment Program today at the Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark (DAMKA) Resource Centre. This initiative is designed to empower caregivers by equipping them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to effectively lead, mentor, and offer essential support to children and adolescents living with HIV (CALHIV) and Sickle Cell Disease.Through this program, caregivers will gain valuable insights into providing emotional, medical, and social assistance, ensuring that the health and well-being of CALHIV and individuals affected by Sickle Cell Disease are nurtured holistically. DAMKA CBO POULTRY PROJECT INAUGURATION

Today, we officially inaugurated the Damka CBO Poultry Project! The event began with a heartfelt prayer at the construction site, seeking God’s blessings for the project’s success. The gathering included Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark (DAMKA) staff, led by Director Dorothy Caroline Mabunde, along with Pastor Moses and the dedicated construction team. This project aims to create sustainable income opportunities and improve food security for the community. We look forward to seeing it thrive and make a positive impact. Miriam (SD), shared plans for 2025 and emphasized the importance of collaboration between caregivers and Project Participants to ensure the success of Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA She also urged everyone to fully engage by attending all club meetings and taking full responsibility for their health, while adhering to DAMKA's policies for a brighter future ahead.

A HARVEST OF HOPE AND GRATITUDE

In September 2024, Don Amolo Kids Ark donated farm inputs to caregivers of children living with disabilities, aiming to promote sustainable livelihoods and change lives—one family at a time. Today, we celebrate a beautiful success story! One caregiver used the support to plant maize and recently harvested enough to feed himself and the child under his care. In a touching gesture of gratitude, he gifted some of the maize to our staff, who enjoyed it together. This is the power of working together to create meaningful impact. Thank you to everyone who supports our initiatives—your generosity is changing lives!

MERRY CHRISTMAS & A BLESSED YEAR 2025

STRENGTHENING SICKLE CELL CARE: DAMKA AND KAKAMEGA COUNTY VALIDATE DATA COLLECTION TOOL

DAMKA in collaboration with the Kakamega County Health Department, hosted a breakfast meeting today to deliberate on the next steps for implementing Sickle Cell Disease initiatives in Butere and across Kakamega County. A key highlight of the meeting was the validation of the KOBO Sickle Cell Data Collection Tool, which is scheduled for piloting this Saturday at Butere Sub-County Hospital. During the meeting, Mrs. Peninah Mukabana, the Kakamega County CECM Health, emphasized the importance of data quality in improving care for Sickle Cell patients. She remarked. "Thank you, DAMKA, for your continued partnership. We all agree that Sickle Cell Disease remains a significant challenge in our region. The point of care starts with the quality of data we collect, as it forms the foundation of the numbers we rely on. The Kobo tool is an innovative yet simple solution that will enable us to collect accurate data, helping us better understand the population we serve and track those seeking treatment. Whether patients are treated at Butere or Mumias Level IV hospitals, this tool allows us to monitor treatment data and ensure continuity of care. This initiative is both important and timely, as we transition toward electronic data management. The Kobo Collect tool serves as an excellent entry point into this electronic era, enhancing our capacity to deliver consistent and effective care.” The meeting was graced by the presence of the Chief Officer Medical Services Dr. David Alilah, Chief Officer Public Health Mrs. Rose Muhanda and Director Medical Services Dr. Stephen Wandei

DAMKA SAVINGS AND CREDIT CO-OPERATIVE SOCIETY (DAMKA SACCO)

Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark (DAMKA) is set to launch the DAMKA Savings and Credit Co-Operative Society (DAMKA SACCO) in January 2025, marking a significant milestone for the Butere & Khwisero community. This initiative aims to empower members through access to affordable loans and structured savings, promoting financial independence and economic growth. It will also provide crucial support to vulnerable families, particularly those affected by HIV and Sickle Cell Disease, helping them meet essential needs like healthcare and education. By fostering a culture of savings and uniting members around shared financial goals, DAMKA SACCO will strengthen community solidarity and enhance overall well-being.

DAMKA ADOLESCENTS' HEALTH CAMP 2024

"My health, my responsibility!" – DAMKA Director speaking during DAMKA Health Camp for adolescents living with HIV at Mabole Boys Secondary School. She encouraged them to take charge of their health, emphasizing the importance of adherence to medication, regular check-ups, and healthy lifestyle choices. She reminded them that managing their health is not only a personal responsibility but also a key to leading a full and active life.

DAMKA ADOLESCENTS' HEALTH CAMP 2024

The 4-Day Don Amolo Memorial Kids’ Ark (DAMKA) Health Camp 2024 for Adolescents Living with HIV (ALHIV) is currently being held at Mabole Boys High School. This year’s theme is "Building Brighter Futures: Empowering Young Minds with Health, Skills, and Resilience." The camp’s objectives include promoting health education and awareness, fostering skill development, supporting mental health and emotional resilience, enhancing physical well-being, and encouraging empowerment and advocacy among the participants.

DAMKA WORLD AIDS DAY

On 1 December Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA joins partners and communities to commemorate World AIDS Day 2024. Under the theme ''Take the rights path: My health, my right!”, Don Amolo Memorial Kids Ark - DAMKA is calling on global leaders and citizens to champion the right to health by addressing the inequalities that hinder progress in ending AIDS.

OPENING OF THE FOURTH BUCK STATION AT MULWANDA FOR THE DAMKA GOAT PROJECT

We are glad to announce the opening of our fourth buck station at Mulwanda for the DAMKA Goat Project! Today, we had the privilege of meeting Philip, one of our project participants. Philip, who is currently on school holiday, was found sourcing grass for the milk goat. He gladly received this buck, which will not only serve his goat but also those of other DAMKA Project participants at Mulwanda. DAMKA HEALTH HOUSE HOLD TESTING

DAMKA is conducting Household Health Testing in the villages of Eshirumba, with the goal of promoting a healthy community. This initiative includes comprehensive health assessments and education, with HIV testing being a critical component of our efforts. GSK TEAM VISIT TO DAMKA

DAMKA Director Dorothy Caroline Mabunde gladly welcomes the GSK Team at DAMKA Headquarters. A dedicated nurse cum research scientist from Butere, Dorothy is on the forefront in giving hope to children living with HIV and those affected by Sickle Cell disease and ensuring they live a normal life, access equal opportunities in education and grow into better citizens. During this visit, GSK Team met children living with HIV who are healthier thanks to antiretrovirals and the incredible support of clinicians and Don Amolo Memorial Kids' Ark volunteers who work tirelessly to reduce stigma, drive adherence to medication and support their broader health, wellbeing and education.

PREVENTING DRUG AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE ACROSS ALL AGE GROUPS FOR OUR PROJECT PARTICIPANTS

At a recent club meeting at Khwisero Hospital, station heads educated project participants on the dangers of drug and substance abuse. They provided age-specific guidance for children under 10, ages 10-14, and those 15 and older. For the youngest group, the focus was on recognizing factors like curiosity and environmental influences that might lead to substance exposure. Older children and teens discussed peer pressure, with strategies to resist it. Parents and caregivers received practical tools to prevent substance abuse, including setting family rules, fostering strong family bonds, and promoting open communication to build trust and awareness.

A CAREGIVER AT "KHWISERO A" GLADLY RECEIVES A MILK GOAT FROM DAMKA

The Don Amolo Kids Ark Goats Project is dedicated to providing nutritious goat milk to orphaned and vulnerable children living with HIV/AIDS and sickle cell disease. This initiative not only ensures a sustainable source of high-quality milk but also empowers children and their families with skills for self-reliance. Committed to enhancing physical health and overall quality of life, the project aims to foster resilience and make a lasting impact.
